Safety Series: Digging Deeper into Construction Trenching and Excavation Hazards
is comprised of three modules taught in a 7.5-hour format as follows:
Module I
The Occupational Hazards Associated with Construction Site Excavations

Explain Trenching and Excavations procedures in the United States Today
Leading, Coaching, Mentoring Outcome:
This module addresses your ability to effectively lead, teach, mentor, and support co-workers in achieving work goals safely.
Social Styles:
Explain why adapting one’s social style can improve effectiveness of communication and site safety.
Discuss and demonstrate effective tactics for building rapport.
Module II
The Regulatory Requirements for Employers Engaged in Excavation Activities & Hazard Control
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
Explain how the Competent Person relates to safety and productivity,
Describe the various Protective Systems in Excavations
Explain Worker Access In and Out of Excavations
Address the Presence of Utilities
Identify Hazards Associated with Vehicular Traffic.
Identify Hazards Associated with Heavy Equipment
Excavation Hazards Associated with Falling Loads
Module III
Soil Characteristics & Protective Systems in Excavations
Learning Objectives:
Upon successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
Explain trench safety measures
Explain the hierarchy of controls
Explain requirements and responsibilities of an Excavation / Trench Competent Person.
Explain soil mechanics and characteristics
Explain protective systems to prevent cave-in.
